Our Propeller
Established in 2018, the Port of Lugano, part of the International Propeller Club, is a reference point for those interested in the promotion, enhancement and support of all sectors related to the maritime industry. The Club is part of International Propeller Club, a network with a total membership of over 13,000 professionals all around the world.
Our membership here in Lugano is a rich collection of professionals from all maritime sectors; from merchant to ship brokers, maritime lawyers, salvors and recruiters and many other trades. With such a diverse group of professionals, our club is a source of great experience and knowledge.
The International U.S. Propeller
The Propeller Club was conceived in 1922 as an ever-growing group of maritime professionals met informally each day over lunch to discuss issues of the industry.
As the group became too large for casual conversation, speakers began to be invited to address the group. Growth continued, and in January of 1923 the “Propeller Club of the Port of New York” was formed, with thirty-three in attendance choosing the name and scheduling regular meetings.
News of the club spread to other port cities, and Propeller Clubs were formed in Boston, New Orleans, and at Yale University. On November 7, 1927, The Propeller Club of the United States as a national and international organization was formed, with individual member clubs designated as “Ports.” Ports followed in Tampa, Seattle, Jacksonville and Miami.

About us
The Port of Lugano Chapter of the International Propeller Clubs was established in 2018 thanks to the initiative of a group of prominent shipping and trading – both professionals and business owners – established in Lugano.
The Propeller Lugano is a focal point for those interested in the enhancement and wellbeing of all sectors of the maritime and commodities’ trading industries. The club is part of the International Propeller Clubs of the U.S. that conglomerates a network of similar clubs around the world with a total membership estimated at over 13,000.
Our membership here in Lugano is a rich collection of professionals from various maritime sectors: shipowners, commodity traders, ship brokers, maritime lawyers, marine insurance underwriters and brokers and many other trades; such a diversified group of professionals is – no doubt – a source of great experience and knowledge.
Our aim is to develop further the Port of Lugano Chapter membership including new members from other Swiss Cities and anyway connected with the shipping and trading communities operating in our territory.
We have events scheduled all the yearlong, organized in different venues, where we enjoy a convivial social gathering, whilst being educated and/or entertained by a variety of distinguished guest speakers who each bring their own expertise across a broad spectrum of maritime and other related subjects.

The International Network
The first overseas Propeller Club Port was formed in Hamburg, Germany, in 1932, by Americans engaged in the maritime business there.
The membership comprises a cross section of the maritime industry throughout the United States and in many cities overseas. The Propeller Club is particularly well equipped to promote, further and support the merchant marine. “Propeller” in the name refers to the propulsion of ships and is symbolic of the driving force required to communicate the need for an adequate, privately-owned merchant marine for both overseas and domestic commerce.
The international Propeller Club of the United States is an international business network dedicated to the promotion of the maritime industry, commerce and global trade.
There are more than 80 Ports in maritime locations around the world, including almost 35 in foreign cities.
